Egyptian Pound (E£) = 100 piastres.

Notes are in denominations of E£1, 5, 20, 50 and 100.Coins are in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 25 and 50 piastres.

Currency exchange

Available at banks, official bureaux de change and most of the hotels. Banks tend to have better exchange rates than bureaux de change or hotels. All common international currencies are accepted in Egypt.

Credit & debit cards in Egypt

American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard and Visa are accepted, but only larger restaurants or hotels in Cairo and restaurants in tourist areas will accept credit cards as payment. Please check with your credit or debit card company for details of merchant acceptability and other services which may be available in egypt.

Travellers cheques

To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travellers are advised to take travellers cheques in Euros, US Dollars or Pounds Sterling.

Currency restrictions

The import and export of foreign currency is unlimited and the import of local currency is unlimited. The export of local currency is prohibited.
