The restaurants are
listed alphabetically within the above 5 categories. These categories
are an overall guideline, rather than an exact definition of the
establishments.
South Africa has a VAT of 14 % on services, which is generally included
in the prices quoted on menus. Most restaurants do not levy a service
charge and ‘waitrons’ (local term which incorporates
waitresses and waiters) expect to be tipped 10 % to 15%, however,
tables of over 6 or 8 are often charged an automatic 10% service
charge. During the peak season, it is recommended to always book
a table in advance. Diners should also take note that smoking laws
are strict in Cape Town and smoking is not permitted in the majority
of restaurants.
The prices quoted with each restaurant guideline are for an average
3 course meal and a bottle of house wine,
or the cheapest equivalent. These prices include VAT but they do
not include service charge or tip. |
