served as the country's capital under monarch's from the 17th -
the 19th centuries. Royal ruins rise upon a hill offering fantastic views of the countryside.
Tonle Bati
Tonle Bati is about 40 kilometres southeast of Phnom Penh, and counts two famous 12th century temples.
Ta Prohm which was built by Jayavarman VII, is consecrated
both to Brahma and to Buddha, and is known for its peaceful bas reliefs.
Yeay Peou is also known for its bas reliefs.
Prasat Neang Khmau
The temple of the Black Virgin is about 55 kilometres south of Phnom Penh. It may once have
served as a sanctuary to Kali, the dark goddess
of destruction.
Phnom Chiso
60 kilometres southeast of Phnom Penh, Phnom Chiso
is 1 of the 11th century temple set upon a small jungle clad mountain that offers
stunning views of the countryside. |
