Shopping
Center
Shops are normally open every day including Sundays from 9am until
9pm. In smaller cities, some shops may close between 1 pm and 5
pm.
Bargaining is customary in the smaller shops and
markets. The technique is to start at half the asking price and
slowly increase your offer until a negotiation is reached. It helps
to smile whilst bargaining. Jakarta
Jakarta has plenty of options for the diehard bargain
shopper. If you are in search of something unique, head to the antique,
carvings and handicrafts at Jl.
Surabaya and Ciputat raya.
Here rows of stores are abundant with anything from antique furniture,
and brass ship's compasses to Dayak swords from Borneo.
If you prefer air conditioned comfort and designer labels, visit
the modern shopping malls such as Pasar
Raya, Plaza Senayan, Plaza Indonesia, Pondok Indah Mall,
and Taman Anggrek, 1 of the largest mall in South
east Asia.
There are many streets that used to be the "downtown"
areas of the old neighborhoods. The blok M area
is easily reachable from anywhere has many stores to satisfy your
shopping desire.
The best shopping for electronics is in Mangga
Dua Electronics Center I West Jakarta or Ratu Plaza
in South Jakarta. The Pasar Seni Art Markets in
Ancol is a good place for paintings and other handicrafts.
An interesting place is the Jatinegara gemstone
market, with a huge range of precious and semiprecious
stones. The Pasar Baru area presents many traditional
textile shops. |
