Lao Kip (Kip) = 100 cents. Notes are in denominations of Kip5,000, 2,000, 1,000, 500 and 100.

Currency exchange

US Dollars and Thai Baht are the easiest currencies to exchange. They are also widely accepted in markets, shops, restaurants and hotels in Vientiane and Luang Prabang.

Credit & debit cards

Major credit cards can be used in the more up market hotels and tourist-oriented restaurants. Contact your credit or debit card company for details of merchant acceptability and additional services which may be available.

Travellers cheques

Limited acceptance. To avoid exchange rate charges, travellers are strongly advised to bring travellers cheques in US Dollars or Thai Baht.

Currency restrictions

The import and export of local currency is not permitted. No restrictions are imposed on the import or export of foreign currency; however, amounts more than US$2,000 must be declared.

Banking hours

Banks are open Mon-Fri, from 8.00 am - 12.00 pm and from 1.30 - 5.30 pm.
