An introduction to Maldives
For many years, the Republic of Maldives has been one of
the isolated and peaceful country in the world. A graceful number
of low-lying coral islands situated in the Indian Ocean are
excellent for scuba diving, water sports and sunbathing. All of
these places of interest still exist, but recently the tourism potential
has developed in the form of many of island resorts.
Quite a few tour companies have included the Maldives to
their programmes. However, since direct flights from Europe began,
the islands have become a progressively popular long-distance paradise.
The Maldives is made up of 26 natural atolls with about 1,190 islands,
most of them are uninhabited. Many of the resorts are located in
Male (Kaafu) Atoll. Only a few are situated in Vaavu, Baa
and Lhaviyani. Alifu (Ari) Atoll has been designated the
new Tourism Zone of the Maldives and new hotels and resorts are
in the process of refurbishing and constructing.
All resorts provide night-fishing trips, excellent snorkeling and
windsurfing, and most have scuba diving facilities, banana-boating,
catamaran sailing, parasailing, water-skiing and volleyball. Many
provide other sporting facilities as well as tennis and badminton.
This guide describes a few of the main resort islands in the Maldives.
Additional information is available from tour companies or by directly
contacting the island resort. |
