Notes
(a) Not all Muslim festivals noted above are national holidays,
but all will
involve
Muslim businesses. Muslim festivals are scheduled
following local sightings of different phases of the moon and
the dates listed above are approximations. In the lunar month of
Ramadan that precedes Hari Raya Puasa
(Eid al-Fitr), Muslims fast during the day and feast in the evening
and regular business patterns may be
paused. Many restaurants
are closed during the day and there are sometimes restrictions on
smoking and drinking. Some disruption may also occur into Hari Raya
Puasa itself. Hari Raya Puasa and Hari
Raya Haji (Eid al-Adha) may last from 2 - 10 days,
relying on the town. For additional information, see the World
of Islam appendix.
(b) Hindu festivals are celebrated in accordance with local astronomical
observations and it is only possible to forecast during the month
of their occurrence. |
