Colombo
Golf Club
The Colombo Golf Club, founded in March 1879 was later designated
the Royal Colombo Golf club. The club moved to
its present location at Model Farm Road, Borolo, in 1896. The nine-hole
course, which was first constructed, was extended to form the superb
18-hole course of today.
Golfers visiting the island are welcomed as temporary members. Temporary
members are entitled to use the bar, restaurant and well equipped
professional's shop. Golf clubs are available on hire.
Tennis
The main hotels which include the Oberoi, Inter-continental,
Ramada, Taj Samudra
and Hilton provide tennis courts. If you are foriegners,
advance bookings are advised. Temporary members
and guests are welcome to some private clubs. These are the Orient
club, Rajakeeya Mawatha, near Royal collage; Sri
Lanka Tennis Association 45, Sri Marcus Frenando mawatha,
Colombo 7; Women's International club, 16, Guildfort
crescent, Colombo 7; and Nondescript's cricket club,
Maitland Place, Colombo 7.
Squash
The Oberoi, Inter - Continental,
Taj Samudra and Ramada
hotels have squash courts available. The Gymkhana club
and the Otter Aquatic club, 380, Bauddhaloka
Mawatha, (Bullers Road), Colombo 7, welcome temporary members.
Swimming
The beach of Kinross at Wellawatte is a very well-known place for good swimming in the city while in the south is Mount Lavinia Beach which is 12 kilometres from the Fort. It is the most
popular place for the sea and sun. The Kinross Swimming & life saving club, station Road, Wellawatta, has temporary
membership to visitors. The private Otter Aquatic club, 380, Bauddhaloka Mawata, Colombo 7, allows temporary members
and guests to use its swimming pools.
Health
Clubs
All of the 5-star hotels in the city provide sports
centres and health clubs with a great selection of physical fitness
equipment’s and activities. A few - the Hilton, Ramada and Taj - have temporary
memberships for short-term visitors.
Aerobics
Classes
Some of the 5-star hotels provide a regular program of aerobics
classes by skilled instructors.
Rowing
and Boating
The Colombo Rowing club,
51/1 Chittampalam Gardiner
mawata, Colombo 2, offers a fine clubhouse by Beira Lake. The entrance is opposite the lake house bookshop.
The Royal Colombo Yacht club, at Colombo harbor, has dinghy
racing.
The Ceylon Motor Yacht club, 14
miles south of Colombo on Bolgoda Lake, Moratuwa has dingy racing.
Parks
The Vihara Maha Devi Park at Colombo 7, is opposite
the town Hall. This well-tended park is a very good place for a relaxing walk or to be in
the shade of large flowering trees. Several small parks coming with playgrounds are found around the city. |
