The centre
of the island has the most wide-ranging landscape.
The east-west cross-island highway passes through fabulous
mountain passes, most particularly the Taroko Gorge,
a ravine with towering cliffs shot through with widespread marble
deposits.
Lishan, located 1,945 metres (6,381 feet) up on Pear
Mountain, is a well-known mountain resort. Some other popular
places of interest in the mountains are the Chitou
Forest recreation area, the Sun Moon Lake,
the alpine railway to Alishan,
and Yu Shan (Jade Mountain).
All over the central area, there are numerous temples. The region's
most important towns are Taichung, one of the
largest ports on the island, and Hualien
in the east.
