Dong Notes are in denominations of VND100,000, 50,000, 20,000, 10,000, 5,000, 2,000, 1,000, 500, 200 and 100. There are no coins.

Currency exchange

The US Dollar is the most used foreign currency. British, Australian Singaporean, Japanese, and Thai currency, as well as the Euro can normally be exchanged in the bigger cities; however, difficulty may be experienced trying to exchange any other currencies. There is a service charge for exchanging money in banks.

Debit and credit cards

Many establishments accept MasterCard and Visa. Consult your financial institution for details of merchant acceptability and other available services.

Travellers cheques

These are accepted in most hotels and banks. To avoid exchange rate charges, its recommended to take travellers cheques in Euros or US Dollars

Currency restrictions

Importing or exporting local currency is prohibited. Import and export of foreign currency over US$3,000 must be declared. Receipts for all expenses and purchases should be kept.
