| The Watersports industry
is badly regulated. There have
been numerous fatal accidents and it is not advised to rent jet
skiis in New Providence and Paradise Island, unless experienced.
These are remarkably well catered for in The Bahamas,
parasailing, sailing, diving (the South Shore on New Providence
is a particularly good location and offers SUB, personal underwater
submarinesm for amateur underwater explorers, please see www.sub-bahamas.com),
snorkelling, swimming and water skiing are all widely available.
The temperature of the sea seldom drops below 21
°C (70 °F), even in midwinter. Equipment
is available from hotels, shops and marinas. Surfing can be done
on Eleuthera and windsurfing on Grand Bahama and in Nassau. Sport
fishing is well known throughout the islands. For further details
on beaches and diving, please see the Regions section.
Tennis, volleyball, baseball, squash, softball, basketball, soccer,
rugby, golf, American football and cricket are all popular. Brilliant
facilities exist for squash and tennis.
There are 8 18 hole and a 9 hole golf course available and the islands
are host to major tournaments. Grand Bahama Island is the golf capital,
offering 5 world class courses, 2 being at Lucaya
Golf & Country Club. There are fitness centres and gyms which
are open to visitors on Nassau / Paradise Island and on Grand Bahama
Island. Great spa facilities and yoga tuition exist throughout the
islands. An assortment of new age therapies are available.
