Getting Around - Internal Travel |

Air
Domestic flights operate between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap
for Angkor and travel time is about 45 minutes. There
are also flights to Battambang, Koh Kong,
Sihanoukville and Stung Treng.
Newly upgraded Siem Reap Airport is the
gateway for visitors going to see the Angkor temples. It is a 7-10 minute taxi ride from the city.

Sea
Ferries depart from the Psar
Cha Ministry of Transport Ferry docking between 102 and
104 Streets and travel to Kompong Cham, Kompong Chhnang, Kratie, Phnom Krom and Stung Treng.
Boats are available from Phnom
Penh to Siem Reap. Even though this is a route that popular with
travellers, due to the present rise in crime, inter-city boat travel
should be restricted to the fast boats to Kratie and Kompong Cham.
Rail
Some train services operate; the fairs are not high
but take much longer than buses. International service to Bangkok
is in the planning stages but a great deal of repair work is still
needed.
Road
Traffic drives on the right side of the road.
Most roads are in bad condition, the highway to Vietnam is open.
It is possible to drive from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City in a
day but there are many formalities following the use of the same
car all the way.
Right hand drive vehicles are not allowed to enter Vietnam.
Both Cambodian and Vietnamese visas must be obtained in advance
and the Vietnamese visa must state
‘Moc Bai’ (the border point on the
Vietnamese side) as a point of entry/exit otherwise
travellers risk being turned back.
Cambodian drivers are prone to recklessness and accidents are comparatively
frequent. Road travel safety outside urban areas varies from region
to region. Potential risks can be reduced if travel is undertaken
in vehicle convoy only during daylight hours. Information about
security should be obtained before considering any extended road
journeys.
Buses to Phnom Penh suburbs
are available from 182 Street. The bus station operates between
5.30 am - 5.30 pm.
Taxis can be hired in the main cities; however, cyclo’s
or tricycles and motodops or motorcycles are a
slow but cheap way to see the city. Some of the
drivers, particularly those found outside the main hotels, speak a
little English or French.
Official visitors can arrange to hire a government car
and driver. Enquiries about car hires should be
sent to the Ministry of Tourism. (see Contacts

Documents: An
International Driving Permit is not recognised
in Cambodia and car hire is not advisable. Visitors
should hire a car with a driver instead which is only a bit more
expensive than car hire. |
