Geography
India shares borders to the north with China, Nepal and Bhutan,
to the northwest with Pakistan, and to the east with Bangladesh
and Myanmar. The Arabian Sea lies to the west, and to the east the
Bay of Bengal and to the south the Indian Ocean. The Maldives lies
off the southwest coast and Sri Lanka off the southeast coast. The
far northeastern states and territories are all but divided from
the rest of India by Bangladesh as it points northwards from the
Bay of Bengal towards Bhutan. The Himalayan mountain range to the
north and the Indus River (west) and Ganges River (east) form a
natural barrier between India and the rest of Asia. India can be
divided into 5 regions: Western, Northern (including Kashmir and
Rajasthan), Central, Southern and Eastern.

Language
India’s official language is Hindi which is spoken by about
30% of the population; English is frequently used for official or
business purposes. Also, 17 regional languages are recognized by
the Constitution. These include Punjabi, Bengali, Gujati and Oriya,
which are heavily spoken in the north, and Telegu and Tamal, which
are common in the south. Other regional languages are Kannada, Marathi,
and Malayalam. The Muslim population mainly speaks Urdu.
Religion
India is about 80% Hindu, 11% Muslim with Sikh, Christian, Jain
and Buddhist minorities.
