Air

Iran Air runs services to Esfahan, Ahwaz, Kish, Mashhad, Shiraz, Tabriz, Tehran and Zahedan and other major cities.

Aseman Air also runs services to the main cities. The large size of Iran makes internal flights the most practical method of transport.

Rail

RAJA Trains run a fairly inclusive internal rail network. Major intercity trains operate on 5 main regional routes, Azarbaijan route (Tehran – Jolfa), Golestan route (Tehran – Gorgan), Hormozgan route (Tehran – Bandar-e-Abbas), Khorasan route (Tehran – Mashhad), and Khozetan route (Tehran – Khorramshahr).

Several mountainous regions and the desert are only accessible by train. Air-conditioned trains, and sleeping and dining cars are available on many trains.

Please contact RAJA Trains (c/o Iranian Islamic Republic Railways) or see our Travel – International section for more information.

Road

The road network is extensive, with more than 51,300 kilometres (31,800 miles) of paved roads and 490 kilometres (304 miles) of motorways, but the quality is unreliable. The 2 main roads, the A1 and A2, link the Iraqi and Pakistani borders and the Afghan and Turkish borders. The traffic drives on the right in iran.

Bus

The bus services are widespread, cheap and comfortable, although services tend to be erratic.

Taxi

Taxis are easily found in all cities. The urban taxis (orange or blue) will carry many passengers at a time and are much cheaper than the private taxis which only carry 1 person.

Unauthorized taxis should be avoided, use only genuine taxis or those ordered through official companies. Group taxis for up to 10 passengers are available for intercity journey. Prices can be bargained before hand and tipping is uncommon.

Car hire

Car rental is available in most cities and from airports.

Documentation

International Driving Permits (IDP) are advised for driving in Iran but it is not legal necessity. Personal insurance is necessary. All motorists entering Iran must obtain a Carnet de Passage en Douane and an International Certificate of Vehicle ownership.

Urban

Tehran has an broad bus system, including double deckers. Tickets are bought in advance at kiosks.
