Tabriz, Iran

well, we've made it into iran. we met up with jodi in dogubayazit, turkey, a town that affords excellent views of mount ararat. we exlpored the ishak pasa palace with the kennelly's and said goodbye... the ride from van to dogubayazit was excellent. steve and i watched a movie in the backseat with kids, and somewhere along the road we stopped to check out a fairly impressive waterfall. a good road trip, to say the least. i just wish we had found a way to repay them.

our trek to and across the iranian border was simple and smooth. i was really expecting a little more excitement - they didn't even check out bags. maybe on the way out.

we're in tabriz now, a city with decidedly turkish influences. we haven't really had a major culture shock yet, but maybe as we continue on. tomorrow we're going to check out the covered bazaar here - 35km of shops under a canopy of bricks. i'm not really in the mood to spend money yet, or buy any souvenirs of a trip i've really yet to take.

all in all, no really extensive opinion on iran, except that the people seem genuinely friendly and open. and the gender dynamics are interesting but expected. in fact, its maybe a little more moderate than i anticipated.
after the bazaar and maybe a trip to elgoli park, we'll head off to either masuleh (a village among the hills and paddyfields near the caspian sea) or to tehran. our itinerary is really undiscussed.

steve and i find it eternally amusing that jodi needs to fuss with her headscarf at all times. jodi is most certainly not a headscarf kinda gal.

jodi and i got an email from home... our second goldfish died. a pitty, but saves us the trouble passing among all our friends to take care of it. i kind of liked nasser (the fish), but there will always be pets stores in istanbul to buy another.
