Pisa International Airport

Pisa’s airport, Galileo Galilei, is the international gateway to Florence. Situated 80km (50 miles) from Florence, it provides easy access to the city by road or rail. As one of Italy’s busiest airports, Pisa handles around 1.1 million passengers per year.

Major airlines

Italy’s national airline, Alitalia (telephone number: (055) 27881), connects Pisa to all the major Italian cities, including daily flights to the intercontinental airports of Milan and Rome. British Airways and Ryanair operate daily flights to London (Gatwick and Stansted respectively), while Lufthansa flies to Paris and Monaco, and Gandalf to Barcelona.

Money and communications

There is a bank with an ATM and currency exchange machine and a post office.

Eating and drinking

There is a bar on the ground floor. On the first floor, there are two restaurants, one of which is self-service.

Shopping

The shopping area, La Corte, can be accessed from both floors. There is a tax-free shop in Departures and a tax-refund facility is available.

Luggage

A left-luggage service is available at the information office. A porter service is available.

Other facilities

These include a first aid station and an Air Health Office, with a surgery with vaccinations available. There is also a children’s play area in the airport.

Information desks

There is an airport information desk in the Arrivals hall (telephone number: (0)50 849 300), which can provide information on flights and tourist information, rail and bus tickets can also be bought here. The tourist information desk is situated just outside the Arrivals hall (telephone number: (0)50 503 700).

Disabled Facilities

The airport is equipped with disabled toilets and lifts with ramps inside and outside the terminal. TDDs are available for the hearing impaired. Reserved parking is available in the short-term and multi-storey car parks. Disabled travellers should inform their airline of any special assistance required prior to travel.

Business facilities

The Galilei Business Centre (telephone number: (0)50 849 200; e-mail: bastari@pisa-airport.com) has a meeting room which can hold up to 50 people and two smaller rooms which can accommodate up to 10 people. The Etruria Hall has audiovisual equipment, including an overhead projector, microphone, slide projector and screen. There is also a VIP lounge.

Car Parking

There are both short and long-term car parks located at the airport, with space for 1,200 vehicles. Short-term parking, for up to one hour, is available outside the Departures area.

Long-term parking is available in the multi-storey car park next to the railway terminal on the Departures side. Parking is free for the first 30 minutes.

Driving Instructions

The airport is within easy reach of Pisa, Florence, Genoa, Leghorn and on the A12 motorway and the Livorno-Pisa-Florence dual carriageway, with airport access at the Pisa Centro exit, or the A11 motorway through Pisa Nord to link with the A12 for the Pisa Centro exit.

Transport to the city

Rail

The railway station is next to the terminal and can be accessed via a covered walkway. Services run to Lucca via Pisa Centrale. There are also trains to Florence (Firenze SMN) via Pisa Centrale, Pontedera and Empol and a service also operates to Florence via Montecatini and Pistoia.

Taxi

CO.TA.PI
(Pisa taxi cooperative) and Radio Taxi (telephone number: (0)50 541 600) run a 24-hour taxi service from the airport. CO.TA.PI also offers a collective taxi, which runs to the Pisa Centrale railway station and Ospedale Santa Chiara, for a flat rate fare.

Bus

Bus number 3 makes several stops in the city centre. The service leaves from just outside the Arrivals hall and from the Cassa Parcheggi outside the Departures hall and can be recognised by a green canopy bearing the words ‘City Bus’.

Car Hire

Auto Europa, Avis, Sixt, Easy Car, Europcar, Hertz, Thrifty, Liberty Rent International and Maggiore/National all have desks in the Arrivals area. Chauffeur-driven cars are offered by Europcar, Liberty Rent International and Sixt.
