Air
The Air Jamaica
Express runs services to and from Kingston, Montego Bay, Negril,
Ocho Rios and Port Antonio. During the winter season, there are
regular daily flights. For more information, please contact the
airline (telephone: 923 6664 or (800) 523 5585, toll free in North
America and the Caribbean). Road
There is a 17,000 kilometres (11,000 miles) road network, 1 3rd
tarred. Regulations
Traffic in Jamaica drives on the left. Speed limits
are 30 miles per hour (48 kilometres per hour) in towns and 50 miles
per hour (80 kilometres per hour) on highways. Seat belts must be
worn at all times and children under 3 years of age must sit in
a child seat. Bus
There is a reliable service in Kingston and Montego
Bay, less reliable for trans-island travel. Coach and minibus tours
can be booked at most hotels. JUTA (telephone: 952 0813) is the
main provider of scheduled and unscheduled bus / minibus and vehicle
charter services. Taxi
Route taxis drive designated courses and pick
up passengers on the way, and they are the cheapest and quickest
way of getting around the island. These have red plates with PP
(Public Passenger) marked on them. They charge fixed rates, and
it is advised to check standard charges prior to embarkation. A
10 % tip is usual. It is suggested that only taxis authorised by
the Jamaica Union of Travellers Association and ordered from hotels
(unshared) should be used. Car
hire
Most major towns, as well as airports, have car rental facilities,
both local and international. Hire can also be arranged using hotels.
Drivers must be aged 25 years or over. There is a general consumption
tax of 15 % on all car hire transactions. Documentation
A full United Kingdom driving licence is valid for up to 12 months.
Urban
Most transport in Kingston is by private minibus.
