Air
Lao Aviation (QV) is the national airline of Laos,
which services the international routes from Vientiane to Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi
(Vietnam), Chiang Mai and Bangkok (Thailand),
Kunming (China) and Phnom Penh (Cambodia). Thai Airways
operates from Bangkok while Vietnam Airlines operates from Hanoi.
International airports
Vientiane
Wattay International Airport
(VTE) is 4 kilometres (2.5 miles)
or about 20 minutes drive from the city.
Facilities
include bureaux de change, bank, post office, bars, restaurants and
car rental.
Departure tax
US$10; but children below 2 years old and transit passengers are tax
exempted.
Rail
There are no railways available in Laos; however, the Thai rail system
extends from Bangkok via Nakhon Ratchasima to Nong Khai, the province that is linked with Laos by a bridge. This bridge and a ferry connect the Lao side of the Mekong,
19 kilometres (12 miles) east of Vientiane.
Road
Travellers can enter Laos via Nong Khai (Thailand) over the Friendship Bridge.

Mek : between Pakse (Laos) and Ubon Ratchathani (Thailand)

Kone (Thailand)–Xaingnabouri (Laos)
One can enter Laos by road from Vietnam either at Lao
Bao or at the new border post of Lak Xao near Vinh.
Visitors can also enter Laos via China, from Mengla
in Yunnan province to Luang Nam Tha.
Overland travel to Myanmar and Cambodia is not practicable due to
current security risks. Inside Laos, the road link between Vientiane
and Luang Prabang to the north has recently been improved. |
