Yangon
City Tour, 1 Day
Previously known
as Rangoon, Yangon has been the capital of Myanmar since 1885. Some
settlements here date back around 2,500 years. This colorful metropolis
has an interesting combination of the scenes from a bygone era and
the modern vibe of lively streets emphasized by tranquil temples
and attractive colonial edifices.
A whole day city tour takes us in the National Museum, Kyaukhtatgyi
Pagoda with its 70m long reclining Buddha, Sule Pagoda, Mahabandoola
Park, India town and busy Chinatown. We also visit the
Bogyoke Market (formerly Scott’s) where everything
and anything is available for purchase, before continuing on to
the world famous golden Shwedagon Pagoda. This masterpiece is home
to an intricate complex of smaller pagodas and Buddha images.
Bago Excursion, 1 Day
Only a 2-hour drive away from Yangon is Bago, previously known
as Pegu. The capital of the Mon Kingdom of Lower Myanmar in the
15th century, it is 1 of the most attractive cities in the country.
The sightseeing tour of this town includes the giant reclining Buddha
of Shwethalyaung, the pagoda of Shwemawdaw, the 4
huge Buddha images at Kyaikpon Pagoda and the old Palace
of Kamboza Thadi.
Take a walk around the colourful Bago Market and drive back
to Yangon. On the way, stop over at the Allied War Cemetery near
Htaukkyan and the woven bamboo factory.
The trip ends after arrival in Yangon.
Thanlyin (Syriam)
& Kyauktan
It is a fascinating journey across the river to Thanlyin
and on to an intriguing pagoda at Kyauktan. In Thanlyin, a
ride on a bus out of town will take visitors to the large, golden Kyaik-khauk
Pagoda towering on a
little hill
on the right side of the road. A little
before this pagoda are the catacombs of 2
well-known Myanmar Poets
Laureate; Natshinaung and Padethayaza. Plenty
of tourist attractions well worth visiting are sited in Thanlyin which include the ruins
of an Old Portuguese Church, constructed during the 18th Century
and the Sacred Heart Church, constructed by French Missionaries
1870.
There is Ye Le Paya, which translates as "the pagoda
at the centre of the river" at Kyauktan. It was
respectably
named because the complex is sitting on a small island in the middle
of the river. In the temple there are pictures of many famous pagodas
from all over the country and even further afield. The longest bridge
in Myanmar connects Yangon and Thanlyin.
Drive time from Thanlyin to Ye Le Paya is approximately 60 minutes.
Twante
A cruise on a boat to Twante (24 kilometres from the capital of Yangon) along the
Twante Canal is around 2 hours. Twante is well known for
its pottery and cotton-weaving industries and it also offers an
opportunity to view life along the canal. |
