Nepalese Rupee (NRs)
= 100 paisa. Notes are in denominations of NRs 1,000, 500, 250, 100,
50, 25, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1. Coins are in denominations of NRs 5,
2 and 1, and 50, 25, 10 and 5 paisa. Currency
exchange
It is unlawful to exchange currency with anyone other than authorized
dealers in foreign exchange which are banks, hotels and licensed money changers.
Travellers should request Foreign Exchange Encashment Receipts
when exchanging currency and hold on to them, as these will help
in many transactions, as well as when getting visa extensions and trekking
permits.
Note
Visitors should be advised that foreign visitors other than Indian
nationals are required to pay their airline tickets, trekking permits
and hotel bills in foreign currency. Credit
& debit cards
American Express as well as MasterCard and Visa are always
accepted in hotels, tourist
shops, restaurants and agencies. Contact your credit or debit card
issuers for information about acceptability and other services, which might
be available.
Travellers cheques
Travellers cheques are accepted at banks and main hotels. Please note that
cash is needed if trekking. To avoid extra charges, travellers should
take US Dollars or Pounds Sterling travellers cheques.

Currency
restrictions
The import of local and Indian currency is
illegal
excepting
the nationals of Nepal and India. Foreign currency amount is unrestricted
but must be declared. Export of local and foreign currency is restricted
to the amount declared on arrival. Only 10% of the
amount exchanged for local currency will be changed into foreign
currency on departure and all exchange receipts must be presented
for these transactions.
Banking
hours
Banks in the Kathmandu valley are open Monday to Friday 9.00 am to 2.30 pm.
In other areas, opening hours are normally Sunday to Thursday 10.00 am to 2.30 pm and Friday 10.00 am to 12 noon. Authorized moneychangers are open 12 hours
a day. |
