Health care

There are numerous hospitals in Qatar, the most recent and modern being the Hamad General Hospital. The Poly Clinic has great dentists. Charges are high and health insurance is necessary. As a precaution against the intense heat, visitors should sustain a high salt and fluid intake.

Food and Drink

All water should be regarded as being possibly contaminated. Water used for drinking, brushing teeth or making ice should have 1st been boiled or otherwise sterilised. Milk is unpasteurised and ought to be boiled. Powdered or tinned milk is available and is advised, however make sure that it is reconstituted with pure water.

Please avoid dairy products which are likely to have been made from unboiled milk. Only eat well cooked fish and meat, preferably served hot. Mayonnaise and salad and may carry increased risk. Vegetables should be cooked and fruit should be peeled.

Other risks

Typhoid fevers and hepatitis A exist, and precautions should be taken. Hepatitis B is wide spread, and Cutaneous leishmaniasis occurs.

Rabies is also present, therefore those at high risk, vaccination before arrival should be considered. If you are bitten, please seek medical advice without delay.

Note

Certificates proving the visitor to be HIV negative may be required if planning on staying more than 1 month in Qatar. Please check with Embassy (see Contacts section).
