Hello friends and family!

You wouldn't believe the magnificence that surrounds me! I am in the Hermitage Museum, also known as the winter palace of the czars. I wish I could describe it as it deserves, but I will try to post some pictures up later. It was crazy walking around here these past few hours, often seeing art pieces that I've seen in text books multiple times. I guess I should it explain what the Hermitage is a little more. Peter the Great and his wife Catherine the Great lived here during the winter times, and Catherine started collecting art work. More and more pieces were added, and now the Hermitage is one of the largest art museums in the world!
More about St. Petersburg--I've learned that the city is built over a marshland; that is why there is so much water; it's called the Venice of Russia. It's a very beautiful city, and Peter the Great's main reason for making it was to Westernize Russia. He didn't name the city after himself, but after St. Peter.
Well, that's about all for now. I just wanted to let you guys know I am safe and so happy to be here! I hope everything is going well for you all as you prepare for school!

love,
Denisa
