Ulyanovsk is Lenin’s birthplace. His parents’ house situated here used to be a very popular museum.
A major space centre, the city was founded in the 16th century around a fortress surveying the Samara and Volgarivers. The Old Town is well known for its fine turn-of-the-century buildings. The Volga shoreline and the nature reserves of the Zhiguli Hills are easily accessible from Samara.
