Economy
Pattaya is Thailand's biggest beach resort and tourism
is by far the largest industry in Pattaya. Without tourism Pattaya
would probably still be a small fishing village. As far back as
40 years ago, Pattaya did not exist except for a handful of fishing
communities. The only industry apart from fishing was salt
farming, just to the north of the present city in Naklua
(literally meaning 'salt fields'). Pattaya's growth as a resort
owes its beginnings to the Vietnam War. The U.S.
military selected Pattaya as a center to send its troops on Rest
and Relaxation. As the development continued, people from Bangkok
began to make the 3 to 4 hour journey to Pattaya, and its status
as Thailand's first and largest beach resort was assured.
Pattaya's economy has also profited from the Thai government's Eastern
Seaboard Development Programme and the discovery of small
reserves of natural gas in the Gulf of Thailand.
Although there are no factories or processing plants in the city
itself , its proximity to Laem Chabang and Rayong means that Pattaya
acts as a center for shopping and entertainment
for the people who are employed in the area. This includes a large
expat community, a many of whom choose to live in Pattaya.
Business
As is the rest of Thailand, most senior businesspeople in large
or international companies will speak English but it is not so common
in smaller companies. The atmosphere is slightly more casual than
in Bangkok.

Pattaya boasts excellent facilities in the Pattaya Exhibition
and Convention Hall (PEACH), a state of the art exhibition
centre, capable of handling large events such as trade shows, sports,
product launches etc. for up to 5,800 people.
